2017 End of Year Message

I presume that ten or twenty years later we would look back year 2017, clearly recognizing this year as the crucial moment for the change of the fate of the Japanese people as well as many people in the world. Both Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and the U.S. President Donald Trump are recklessly driving their policies of destroying “truth” with many lies and deceptions. It is my belief that they are the worst combination of untruthful politicians in the whole history of the U.S.-Japan relationship. We ought to ask ourselves why we have failed to put a stop to such an atrocious situation and how we should tackle it. I am becoming more and more pessimistic and think that it may be too late to counteract this dreadful world trend. However, I would like at least to share with you the following words on “truth, freedom and peace” by German philosopher and psychiatrist Karl Jaspers (1883 – 1969):

Peace is possible only through freedom, freedom only through truth. Hence, untruth is the actual evil destroying all peace: Untruth from cover-up to blind neglect, from lies to mendacity, from thoughtlessness to doctrinaire truth-fanaticism, from untruthfulness of the individual to untruthfulness of the public sphere.
The final word remains: The condition of peace is the shared responsibility of each individual’s way of life in truth and freedom. The question of peace is not primarily a question to ask of the world, but rather for each to ask of oneself.”
(From ‘Truth, Freedom and Peace’ by Karl Jaspers)

I would also like to share with you the most recent work by Michael Leunig, a poet and cartoonist living in Melbourne, who always tries to reveal the truth of human beings and nature through his genuinely warm and kind thoughts. He is one of few Australians whom I truly admire. Its title is “wish list”.

I end this year’s message with the following three pieces of music that I like very much.

1)St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach

Performed by the Netherland Bach Society

With Sato Yusuke (violin) and Tim Mead (alt)

2)Ave Maria composed by Tõnis Kaumann
Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis, of which Kaumann is also a member.

3)Cascading Water Fall (Takiochi) anonymous
Played by Riley Lee, a shakuhachi grand master who lives in Sydney, Australia

With best wishes,
Yuki
